Have you been experiencing strange symptoms after unprotected sex? Have you been expecting a period that hasn’t arrived, or did your birth control fail? If so, you’re likely worried about being pregnant.

While taking a pregnancy test is the only way to confirm a pregnancy, there are symptoms to look out for that could indicate you’re pregnant.

While early pregnancy symptoms are listed below, it’s essential to know that each woman’s experience is different. Some women experience every symptom, while others don’t have any. Plus, these symptoms can also indicate other health conditions. If you have any early pregnancy signs or symptoms, it’s important to take a pregnancy test.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms

When you become pregnant, your hormone levels increase in your body. These hormones tell your body to begin preparing itself for pregnancy, and this process can cause specific symptoms, including:

  • Missed menstrual period: If you think you should have had a period but didn’t, this could mean you’re pregnant. In fact, a missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. This is because those early pregnancy hormones tell your uterine lining to thicken instead of shed, causing you to stop having a menstrual period for the duration of the pregnancy.
  • Sore, swollen breasts: Is your bra fitting tighter lately? Are your breasts more tender than usual? If so, pregnancy could be to blame. Those early pregnancy hormones are already preparing your breasts for breastfeeding.
  • Nausea with/without vomiting: Commonly referred to as “morning sickness,” feeling nauseous or vomiting any time of the day without a known cause (like sickness, etc.) can indicate pregnancy.
  • Increased urination: During pregnancy, your blood volume increases, which in turn causes your kidneys to produce more urine. If you’re running to the bathroom more than normal, this could be a sign of pregnancy, especially if this symptom is accompanied by other early pregnancy signs.
  • Fatigue: Many different conditions and life stressors can cause fatigue, but if you’re feeling more tired than usual and also having other pregnancy symptoms, this could indicate pregnancy.
