Wondering if you might be pregnant? Taking a pregnancy test is your first step in finding out.

At Fempower Medical, we offer free, medical-grade pregnancy testing that’s self-administered. One of our client advocates will walk you through your results. If you receive a positive result, you’ll also be offered a free, limited ultrasound referral, which is the second step for confirming your pregnancy and getting the essential details you need to stay safe.

How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood or urine. HCG is a special hormone that’s typically only found in your body during pregnancy.

From the moment of conception (when the sperm and egg meet), hCG is present. However, hCG levels start low but rise quickly, which is why timing is critical when taking a pregnancy test.

Most at-home pregnancy tests claim to be 99% accurate if taken correctly. These tests use a urine sample to look for hCG. There are also blood pregnancy tests, which can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine-based pregnancy test. However, it’s normally only used if a doctor needs to measure your hCG levels (like if you’re at high risk for miscarriage, etc.).

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

Most at-home pregnancy tests claim to be most accurate if you take them on the first day of your missed period, although some tests claim to deliver accurate results even sooner. This is because if you take the test sooner, your hCG levels will likely be too low for the test to detect.

It’s also advisable to take the pregnancy test first thing in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated, making hCG levels easier to detect.

I Received a Positive Test Result. Now What?

If you received a positive pregnancy test result at home, following up with a lab-quality pregnancy test is important. At Fempower Medical, we offer medical-grade, self-administered pregnancy testing, with results that are explained by one of our client advocates.

If your test is positive at our clinic, we will also offer a free, limited ultrasound referral. This simple scan will verify whether you’re pregnant and give you the essential information you need to stay safe and make an educated pregnancy decision.
