Ultrasound Referrals
Did you receive a positive pregnancy test result? If so, did you know that this is only the first step in confirming your pregnancy? Ultrasound is the next step.
An ultrasound is a simple scan that provides critical details about your pregnancy. It is essential to get an ultrasound scan before making any pregnancy decision.
While we don’t offer ultrasounds in-house, we provide free ultrasound referrals to learn the essential pregnancy details you need to know to stay safe.
How Does Ultrasound Work?
Unlike X-rays, which use radiation and are unsafe during pregnancy, ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to show an image of the inside of your uterus.
During an ultrasound, a medical professional will move a transducer (the wand-like part of the ultrasound machine that transmits the sound waves) over your abdomen or inside your vagina (if you’re receiving a transvaginal ultrasound, which is typically done very early in pregnancy).
While the medical professional moves the transducer to gather details about your pregnancy, you will be able to see your pregnancy on the ultrasound screen.
What Pregnancy Details Will I Learn During an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound scan helps protect your health and determines what options are available by giving you these essential details about your pregnancy:
- Gestational age: Period tracker apps or estimating the dates of your last menstrual period aren’t reliable ways to estimate your pregnancy’s gestational age. An ultrasound will take measurements that will help determine your pregnancy’s gestational age.
- Location: Most pregnancies happen inside the uterus. But rarely, a pregnancy will develop outside the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy, and it’s a life-threatening emergency that needs immediate medical intervention.
- Viability: Roughly 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and it’s possible to have miscarried since you received a positive pregnancy test result. An ultrasound scan will look for signs of life, such as a heartbeat. If you’ve had a miscarriage, you will need medical follow-up to ensure you don’t require treatment.
